Sustainability visionaries, Joey Hundert and Antoine Palmer, gave SNAP a bit of their time to talk about Sustainival, “The World’s First Green Carnival,” and other projects they have on the go. Hundert went to Father Mercredi High School the week before the carnival in September and spoke to hundreds of students. “Part of my talk was to let them know how special this place is for turning dreams into reality, especially as it relates to sustainability,” said Hundert. They have another division called Sustainitech gaining some ground in the region. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has a zero waste project to convert trash to electricity and heat, which will eventually be powering neighbourhoods. The municipality opened up the bid for a greenhouse project harnessing this energy, which was won by Sustainitech. Three modules are being built in shipping containers to produce fish and lettuce- the first is already out at the landfill. The second two will be operational by October with the first harvest planned for November. “I think if the average bear was to find out what was happening here, it would have to tamper with their view of what they believe this place is,” said Hundert.
