STEP RIGHT UP!!! SUSTAINIVAL, THE WORLD’S FIRST GREEN CARNIVAL RETURNING TO FORT MCMURRAY OVER LABOUR DAY WEEKEND

EDMONTON, JUNE 26, 2014- Sustainival, the world’s first green carnival, is returning to Fort McMurray on Labour Day weekend, August 29 – Sept 1, 2014, to feature many exhilarating games, attractions and rides powered by renewable energy! This unique carnival provides an experiential public education platform that celebrates energy literacy, ecology, and clean- technologies.

A staple event in the Fort McMurray area, Sustainival’s Green Carnival and the Green Beast are returning to the Suncor Community Leisure Centre at Mac Donald Island Park. The 2013 event drew nearly 23,000 attendees, about 25% of the regional population. Every sector of the community participated extensively in the production of the event, including each of the regional school boards, the municipality, industry sponsors, about 3-dozen small businesses, and a half-dozen charities who received over $8,000 in donations through our Green Beast fundraising platform. Key sponsors for the 2014 event include Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Suncor, Nexen and CNRL, among others.

The Green Beast is an educational, community wide eco-challenge and serves as a fundraising platform for our charitable partners. The Green Beast transforms the entire Sustainival midway into a giant live-action board game, where participants compete for $15,000 worth of cool eco- friendly prizes in an ‘Amazing-Race’-style contest of stamina and eco-learning. In 2013, over 800 people participated and raised over $8,000 funds for six local non-profit charities in Fort Mac.

Each year, Sustainival events become richer and more deeply engaging, with new attractions and entertainment, new technology demonstrations, extensive community collaboration, and an ever- expanding educational component. In addition to the Carnival Midway and the Green Beast, Sustainival 2014 will feature a Kinetic Stage with local and regional entertainment; the Youth Eco-Science (YES! Expo) a showcase of brilliant young innovators throughout Alberta; Multiple educational pavilions and interactive learning kiosks; and many more cool attractions and entertainers new to the 2014 event.

SUSTAINIVAL ANNOUNCES NEW PROGRAMMING AND ATTRACTIONS FOR THE 2014 FORT MCMURRAY LABOUR DAY EVENT

EDMONTON, JUNE 26, 2014 Sustainival, the world’s first green carnival, is returning to Fort McMurray over Labour Day weekend, August 29 – Sept 1, 2014, to feature many exhilarating games, attractions and rides powered by renewable energy! In addition to the Carnival Midway and the Green Beast eco-challenge fundraiser, Sustainival has announced many more programs, educational pavilions, cool attractions and entertainers for the 2014 event.

The Energy Pavilion is an interactive learning game incorporating exhibits on natural gas, coal, hydro, wind, solar, geothermal, nuclear, and fusion. Each exhibit includes installations representing specific power generation facilities around the world, with priority given to Albertan and Canadian facilities. The game is designed to provide perspective on scale, cost, and environmental impact.

The Kinetic Community Stage is a bicycle powered stage and the cultural centre of the midway. It will feature musical and acrobatic performers from around the province, as well as select speakers on clean-tech and sustainability themes. Additionally, the ILLUMINATE Talent Search will offer an amazing opportunity for local performing artists of all disciplines and ages to showcase their talent. Celebrity judges will be on hand to add a fun blend of vinegar and spice to the competition and to award $5,000 in prizes! Got talent? We want to know about it!

The Youth Eco-Science (YES!) In collaboration with Fort McMurray school boards and high schools, Keyano College, and the regional science fair, Sustainival seeks to identify and engage students who are already involved with active initiatives. We are also seeking and bringing in some young superstars from around the province to create more inspiration.

Additional Education Stations include a native plants and myco- and phyto-remediation exhibits; interactive MindFuel educational kiosks; Flower Power, our interactive mobile biodiesel demonstration laboratory; and a 20ft tall solar-powered 10-seater tricycle named “Daisy” who will be offering regular rides around the lot.

SUSTAINIVAL BACKGROUNDER Changing the world by the seat of Your PantsSustainival began as a question: “How can we effectively reach millions of people and inspire them with a tangible vision of our sustainable future?” After several attempts to answer this question, we came to the obvious conclusion: a bio- powered gravitron.Ok, maybe not so obvious. But the gravitron is indeed spectacular. Sustainival is just a ton of fun. The lights, the action, the nostalgia of being spun, flipped, and swung on these giant devices…What if we could power everything on renewables and use this exhilarating platform to showcase really cool clean-technologies and teach people  about ecology and energy? What if we could take the age-old carnival tradition and turn it into a viral super-launcher for the vanguard of sustainable innovation?

So that’s Sustainival. The world’s first green carnival. We dream of a day when sustainable food, energy, and waste solutions are an integrated part of everyday life. Sustainival is our contribution to the vision of a future where our children thrive in fully realized sustainable communities that enrich both the quality of our lives and the ecosystems that host us.
