Sustainival, The World’s First Green Carnival, Cancels 2020 Festivals in Edmonton and Fort McMurray Due To Ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic

May 13th, 2020

Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, concerns for public safety prompted the annual sustainability themed festival’s decision to cancel its 2020 festivals in Edmonton and Fort McMurray. Sustainival typically hosts large-scale events, featuring a full sized midway, during the month of June. Given the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization determined that there was no way to run these events safely.

“While we are disappointed to not be able to host our 9th annual Sustainival festivals in Edmonton and Fort McMurray, we know this is the right decision for our communities and we support the ongoing efforts to control the spread of COVID-19” said Odette Hutchings, Executive Director of Sustainival. “We look forward to the future when we are once again able to safely bring our unique brand of sustainability education to Albertans.”

Sustainival has been running annual events in cities across Alberta and North America since 2011. This will mark the first year since the organization’s inception that Sustainival has not produced an event. The events feature a full sized midway that is entirely run on renewable energy sources including biofuel and solar power. Sustainival includes a range of educational activities that engage attendees in conversations about the future of energy and sustainability. The organization’s site wide scavenger hunt, the Green Beast Eco Challenge, is a particular hit with attendees of all ages.

Sustainival wishes to thank its many sponsors and partners for their support in preparing for our 2020 festivals. The organization looks forward to working with its valued partners in the future.

Sustainival encourages Albertans to stay tuned for updates from the organization via their website and social media platforms, links are provided below.
